Typhoid fever

Common Name(s)

Typhoid fever

Typhoid fever, caused by the bacteria Salmonella Typhi, is a life-threatening illness that causes diarrhea and a rash. Infection can be prevented and treated with antibiotics. Common in the developing world, this illness is spread by consuming contaminated food or drink, especially in areas of the world where water is likely to be contaminated by sewage or where hand-washing is not as frequent. Once infected, the body shows symptoms of fevers as high as 103 to 104 F, stomach pains, headache, feelings of weakness, or loss of appetite. Fluids and electrolytes should be consumed to replace nutrients lost from severe diarrhea along with antibiotic treatment. A vaccine is recommended to those traveling to developing areas.
